Every once in a while, a creative talent emerges whose work is mesmerising, immersive and utterly desirable. Karina Olen is one such talent, with the ability to draw vibrant, life-like portraits with stunning attention to detail.
Karina was naturally artistic throughout her childhood, studying art during her final year at school. She has been studying a bachelor of fashion design for the past two years additionally, while she always dreamed of drawing and illustrating professionally, she didn’t believe it could become her career. After high school Karina began studying Art at TAFE but the timing never felt quite right – nothing truly sparked her passion. Working in various office jobs in the years that followed, Karina continued to draw as a hobby in her spare time for enjoyment, rather than as a potential profession. She now has put her new skills in fashion illustration, graphic design and textile design to use by teaching fashion illustration to students at a private college.
It was only in May of 2014, after countless comments from work colleagues, family and friends suggesting her talents were worthy of more time and attention, Karina invested in some decent drawing pencils and equipment. It was then that she decided to start sharing some of her favourite images on her Instagram account. In no time at all, Karina’s undeniable talent attracted a serious following and interest from people looking to purchase her work and commission customised portraits.
While Karina’s talents as an illustrator enable her to draw just about everything from Chanel bags to cars, French bulldogs, horses, jewellery and anything in between, her ability to illustrate life-like portraits is most impressive. Using a combination of pencils, ink pens and chalk pastels, Karina brings images to life on the page with captivating realness. Colourful, uplifting and detailed, there’s no mistaking the subjects of her spellbinding works.
Karina has drawn everyone from Hollywood A-listers, models and musicians including Emma Stone, Leonardo Di Caprio, Taylor Swift and even The Ministry of Talent’s very own Pixie Curtis!
