Water Woman, Activist, Author- Bondi
Originally from the United States, Kate Nelson fell in love with the Australian coast and is now residing in Byron Bay. In 2009 she co-founded the non-for-profit organization Save The Mermaids in California and created an Environmental Conservation Organization known as the Plastic Free Mermaid.
At a young age, Kate who loves the ocean, learnt about the harm of non-biodegradable plastics and how they pollute waters and kill marine life. She became so passionate about this issue that she decided to learn how to live without single use plastics and has now gone over a decade without them. She has dedicated her life to educating others on various social media platforms and through gigs and workshops in the hopes that we can reduce our negative effect on the ocean. She is now one of Australia’s leading advocates for plastic minimization.
Kate teaches this lifestyle through DIY YouTube tutorials, inspiring and educational content through Instagram with over 107k followers, and collaborations with other thought leaders, changemakers, and sustainable businesses to amplify awareness and inspire social change.
In 2020 Kate released her first book I Quit Plastics: And You Can Too.
Clearly, Kate aka. The Plastic Free Mermaid, is an inspiring role model for everyone to learn from, and her presence will continue to grow as the importance of raising environmental issues continues to grow internationally.
